Tanzania

Tanzania provides one of the strongest examples of language functioning as national infrastructure. Despite many ethnic communities and local languages, Kiswahili was promoted after independence as a language of national cohesion that crossed regional boundaries. It entered education, government, literature and popular culture, demonstrating that a national language can operate above local identities without requiring them to disappear. The case belongs in the same comparative conversation as Mandarin, Hebrew and Arabic.
